Biography

During his studies in law and music in Rome, for the first time, Stefano Mazzonis di Pralafera took on the role of stage director within the university theatre. From 1983, his first stagings of operas met with resounding success.

He received invitations to be stage director and set designer from several Italian theatres as well as many festivals and opera houses abroad (in Belgium, France, Germany, Israel and Switzerland). Before his appointment as the managing director and artistic director at the Wallonia-Liège Royal Opera, he occupied the position of artistic director for many festivals and concerts and that of superintendent at the City Opera House in Bologna. With considerable experience in audio-visual media, he has produced and presented many programmes on radio and television (for Italian broadcaster RAI).

On our stage, he has in particular produced Tre Intermezzi, introducing three small masterpieces from the works of the 18th century, Il Matrimonio segreto (The Secret Marriage, by Cimarosa), the world premiere of L’Inimico delle donne (The Enemey of Women, by Galuppi) and Guillaume Tell (William Tell, by Grétry). He also produced Il Barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville), La Traviata, Le Pays du sourire (The Land of Smiles), Rita ou le mari battu (Rita or the Beaten Husband) and Il Campanello di note (The Night Bell), Othello, L’Equivoco stravagante (The Curious Misunderstanding, a work for which he obtained the French ‘Prix du Syndicat de la Critique’ prize), Manon, La Grande-Duchesse de Gérolstein (The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein), La Gazzetta (The Newspaper), Rigoletto, L’Elisir d’amore (The Elixir of Love), Lucia di Lammermoor, La Bohème, Nabucco as well as a new production of Jerusalem (by Verdi). This season, he will also be producing Rigoletto and Macbeth.
