About the work

Unfairly unknown, the opera Jérusalem by Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901) is one of the composer’s masterpieces.

Inspired by one of his previous works I Lombardi alla prima crociata, Verdi creates Jérusalem for the Parisian scene. Of French inspiration although he refuses to admit it, Verdi adapts his opera to the tastes of the Parisian public. A ballet is added and the characters reworked.

Blinded with jealousy, Roger kills his brother Raymond by mistake. He then decides to wage a holy war and leaves, devoured by guilt, to join the crusaders in Jérusalem. Gaston, unjustly accused of the murder, also finds refuge in Jérusalem. The culprit and the accused are both reunited to conquer the city. Drama, love affairs, revelations, abduction are on the program … all surrounded by a rich orchestration imagined by one of the greatest Italian romantic composers.
