The first edition of the International Opera Conductor Competition took place in August 2017. During this unprecedented occurrence, 49 candidates from 20 countries were lucky enough to conduct the Orchestra, Chorus and Children’s Chorus of the Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège as well as a whole host of international soloists and were judged by an international jury made up of major personalities. The competition attracted many enthusiastic spectators during its various rounds and was well received by the press. The Second Prize was jointly awarded to the conductors Pierre Dumoussaud (Fr) and Michele Spotti (It), whilst Antoine Glatard (Fr) received the Third Prize.
Registration for the second edition of the competition, which will take place from 21st to 28th August, is now open. In order to highlight the young talents in conducting orchestras on the international scene, the competition is open to candidates of all nationalities born after 1st January 1985, via the on-line registration service which is open until 15th March 2020.

The rounds of the competition
21st and 22nd August 2020
Orchestra conducting knock-out round: for 10 minutes, the candidates will conduct one of the following overtures chosen by the jury: Don Giovanni (Mozart), Nabucco (Verdi), Oberon (Weber), Norma (Bellini), Benvenuto Cellini (Berlioz).
23rd and 24th August 2020
Second round: 24 candidates will work for 20 minutes during a musical rehearsal with soloists on the piano on an extract chosen by the jury from one of the following works: Les Pêcheurs de perles (Bizet), La Bohème (Puccini) et La Traviata (Verdi). These three works will also be featured in later rounds.
25th August 2020
Quarter finals: 12 candidates will conduct the Orchestra with soloists, the Chorus and Children’s Chorus for 20 minutes.
26th August 2020
Semi-finals: 6 candidates will conduct the Orchestra with soloists, the Chorus and Children’s Chorus for 45 minutes.
28th August 2020
Final: 3 candidates will conduct the Orchestra with soloists, the Chorus and Children’s Chorus.
All the rounds are accessible to the public and the press!
The official awards
On completion of the competition, the jury will decide if the First Grand Prize should be awarded . The Orchestra of the Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège will vote during this final round and its vote will have equal weighting as a vote from a jury member.
First Grand Prize:
€ 10,000 + invitation to conduct the Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège for a new production of Il Turco in Italia during the 2020/21 season (the period from 2nd January to 6th February)
