The story

Alzira, an Inca princess, believes that her fiancé, Zamoro, has been killed by the Spanish. Held captive by Governor Gusmano, she refuses to give in to his advances. Zamoro is still alive and tries to lead an attack against the occupying forces, but is captured by Gusmano who threatens to kill him if the beauty does not give in to his advances!

In 1845, Verdi already boasted several major successes in Italy’s theatres. All that remained was to win over Naples and its famous San Carlo Theatre where Saverio Mercadante was enjoying much acclaim. At the height of what he referred to as his “lean years” and exhausted by a sharply increasing number of commissions of works since the success of Nabucco, he called upon a local librettist, Salvatore Commarano, who had written the text of Lucia di Lammermoor for Donizetti.

The synopsis, inspired by Alzire, ou les Américains by Voltaire, is difficult and the versification is taxing. However, from a musical point of view, the splendour of Verdi’s genius is present. The quality of his superb music and the love rivalries of a classical trio are the work’s main assets.

The new co-production that we are presenting with ABAO-OLBE in Bilbao and the Peruvian National Grand Theatre will redeem this forgotten masterpiece that has never before been performed in Liège.

Introduction to performances: curtain-raisers

All the opera performances are preceded by an educational introduction open to all. They take place 30 minutes before the start of the performance, in the company of an opera specialist to provide a pertinent presentation of the work.
