Dreaming up a new season is always a challenge, or rather a series of challenges to be met and directions to be taken, based on the enduring identity of our Opera House and its existing relationships.

This 2023-2024 season will see the Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège welcome new artists, further open up to different audiences, establish new collaborations and propose other artistic horizons while maintaining the level of excellence expected for each production…

The choice to project (itself) as the watchword for this new season was an obvious choice for us, in direct association with the photographic process used for its visual identity. The images projected onto faces displaying diversity invites identification and creates a link between the public and the programming, whilst the Opera House is projecting itself in an open artistic and creative dynamic, in particular by bringing back to our stage composers or works that had slipped out of our repertoire, a trend that is set to increase in the following seasons…

The affinity of the Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège with Italian and French opera is the basis on which, with the invaluable contribution of Musical Director Giampaolo Bisanti, the opera house’s programme for the coming seasons has been elaborated, made up of three Italian operas, three French operas and three operas by composers of other origins, styles or eras.

An addition to these nine operas, the 2023-2024 season will grant a significant place to two participative productions for young audiences, namely Figaro, le Barbier du Bois joli and the first performance of Patiente, mon cœur, as well as a collaboration with several youth associations. Openness and projecting, this time into the future, will once again be the order of the day.

Furthermore, a wide array of concerts is also on the programme: Verdi’s Messa da Requiem conducted by the legendary Maestro Zubin Mehta, an exceptional evening to honour the centenary of Giacomo Puccini’s death conducted by Giampaolo Bisanti and a concert by Argentinean tenor Marcelo Álvarez. Finally, in connection with one of the season’s operas, the ballet Romeo & Juliet by Prokofiev will herald the return of classical dance to our stage.
