DJ SONAR

Sonar is a well-known figure on the Belgian music scene, in particular through his rich career in the hip-hop world.
Open to other artistic forms and curious by nature, it seemed obvious for the Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège to ask him to create, in his own way and according to his sensibility, a mash-up of some extracts from the operas of the 2023-2024 season.

– When the opera contacted you, what did you think?
A new challenge, a new opportunity, my goal in life is to create…

– When the Opera exposed the project to you, what did you think?
J’ai tout de suite aimé l’idée de ce mélange entre la musique classique et mon style musical, j’aime les défis…

– How did you go about your reflection?
I immediately liked the idea of mixing classical music with my musical style, I like challenges…

– How did you work?
With a new tool “Ableton”, indeed it was only a few days ago that I was using this program because before I worked more with samplers…

– What difficulties have you encountered?
Yes and no, with the people who contacted me for the project we discussed it several times to get it right. I was able to have the first drafts listened to and then move towards the final theme.

– What is the musical story behind the video presentation of the season?
An adventure between classical music and modern rhythms, from Romeo and Juliet to the Barber of Seville, then Carmen… A subtle and rhythmic mix that represents the two eras well and proves that they are in tune with their times…
