2023 - 2024

L'After Masterclass

IN AUGUST 2023, THE OPÉRA ROYAL DE WALLONIE-LIÈGE MAKES A NEW APPOINTMENT TO YOUNG ARTISTS : AN OPERA CONDUCTING MASTERCLASS FROM 22ND TO 26TH AUGUST 2023.

Following the creation of the International Competition for Opera Conductors in 2017, it was only natural for the Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège to pursue its commitment to the training of young artists by organising a Masterclass dedicated to the particularities and specificities of conducting an orchestra in the context of an opera.

From 22 to 26 August 2023, Maestro Giampaolo Bisanti, Music Director of our House, will accompany five effective young conductors under the age of 32 through a tailor-made programme focusing on the operas Lucia di Lammermoor, La Traviata, Rigoletto, Il Barbiere di Siviglia and I Capuleti e i Montecchi.

A special feature of the event: in order to offer them the most formative experience possible, the participants will have the opportunity to work with the Orchestra and Choir of the Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège, as well as with soloists from the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel and the International Opera Academy in Ghent.

At the end of this Masterclass, the participants will deliver all the benefits of this training at a closing concert open to the public free of charge, on Saturday 26 August at 3 pm.

Offering a Masterclass in Opera Conducting is something I’ve wanted to do for a very long time.

I’ve been lucky in my professional career because I’ve met people who believed in me and gave me the opportunity to express my talent and potential.

Nowadays, this is very difficult for young people who, all too often, lose themselves in years and years of study without having the opportunity to really practise the discipline, in a profession where you can only really improve and grow with experience on the podium.

I sincerely hope that this Masterclass will be useful to the young people who take part, and that it will give them another tool with which to realise their professional dreams! I’ll be putting all my efforts and dedication into it, because I firmly believe that those who have been lucky in life should help young people to realise their wishes and expectations. What’s more, the opportunity offered to participants by the Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège to work with the Orchestra, the Chorus and a panel of young soloists is a great asset and greatly enhances the formative aspect of the event. Giampaolo Bisanti, Musical Director of the Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège
