A participative opera

Joliette wants to go home. Yet, she bravely faces the tests she has to undergo in order to receive a new heart. In the strange room where she is waiting, Ruméo, a teenager with a fiery gaze, appears and returns, exhausted, from a mysterious expedition… Joliette discovers that there is a parallel universe elsewhere where adventurers carry out crucial missions using their superpowers. These operations are so dangerous that their heroes sometimes end up here, in our world, suffering from diseases. Joliette wonders whether she too is a heroine? And when she thinks of this strange boy, that she fleetingly met between two doors, her heart is not hurting for once: it flutters, pulsates and beats too fast. She hopes very much to see him again…

Adventures? In a hospital? Really? Well, yes, of course! For there reside brave people who face the worst dangers, ready to do anything to save their skin. To look at them, you would think they were doing very badly.

And yet, they lack neither strength, nor courage, nor energy. Yes, there are dramas and tragedies, but also hearty moments of laughter, and parallel lives are invented, elsewhere, in dreamland. There, children, families and carers support each other. This project aims to give a voice to all these heroes and heroines.

The story of this opera for young audiences came into being due to the initiative and via the lively and sensitive pen of André Borbé, based on comments he collected in the paediatric department of a Liège hospital. As for the marvellous music, it was commissioned from the young and talented composer Lionel Polis, who has already worked with André Borbé on the creation of Ursule & Hirsute, performed on our stage in 2021.
